Ice Breaker Concept

Ice breakers are a great tool for the first time a group is together, but also keep their value long after.  The idea behind ice breakers is to break down barriers and increase cohesion within a group.  Team ice breakers and team building exercises are designed to bring people together and so should stick to fun topics such as likes/dislikes, hobbies, and shared attributes.  They are usually fun and interactive and can generally be divided into two categories: introductory activities and team building activities.

Introductory Ice Breakers

Introductory ice breakers are designed for the first time a given group is brought together.  Whether it be the first day of school or a birthday party where not everyone knows each other, introductory ice breakers provide a fun and easy way for everyone to relax and get to know one another.  It gives participants an opportunity to meet and interact with people other than those they may naturally have gravitated toward and levels the playing field for those who may normally be too shy to introduce themselves.

Team Building Ice Breakers

Ice breakers which build a more intimate degree of comfort and trust within a given group can be placed in a separate category and serve better under different circumstances.  For example, they are more effective in an environment where members will be working in close proximity and a certain degree of camaraderie is desired.  This could be a Girl or Boy Scout group, a group of coworkers, or a smaller class.  Whatever the reason, team building exercises and team ice breakers are a fun way to tighten bonds or to forge new ones.
